Marubeni buys EagleRidge Energy, becoming a top-three Barnett Shale gas producer

What's the deal? Japanese trading house MarubeniDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Corporation has acquired EagleRidge Energy, a Dallas-based natural gas operator, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. EagleRidge runs more than 3,500 wells across 450,000 gross acres in the Barnett Shale of North Texas, producing 300 MMcfe/d.

What's the endgame? The purchase turns Marubeni's long-time Texas operating partner into a fully owned arm and lifts its output to roughly 170 MMcfe/d of gas and NGLs. It anchors a North America-centered gas and LNG value chain that Marubeni is building alongside its trading unit MIECODealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

The hire: EagleRidge's team stays intact, with Tom Ashton and Sam Miller sharing the role of co-president to steer operations and finance. Hiroki Shima has been appointed chairman, reflecting Marubeni's backing, while Michael Ronca moves to vice chairman.

Why now? Marubeni has signaled a resource push of about ¥200 billion (~$1.3 billion) through FY2027 into upstream gas and related assets, and this deal is a cornerstone of that plan. EagleRidge has closed several significant transactions since September 2024, building the scale that made it an attractive target.

What could go wrong? The Barnett Shale is a mature basin, so growth depends on operational efficiency rather than fresh discovery. Marubeni is betting on execution in a region where it now ranks third, behind BKV CorporationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and TotalEnergiesDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The deal reflects a broader wave of Japanese trading houses using North American gas to underpin LNG portfolios and power-hungry AI and data-center demand. Nikkei links Marubeni's move directly to securing energy for expanding US data centers — a consolidation of operator control rather than a speculative bet on a mid-size producer.
