STRABAG buys 50.65% of biochar producer ÖKT in low-carbon materials push

What's the deal? STRABAGDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired a 50.65% stake in Ökologische Klärschlammtrocknung Offenhausen (ÖKT), a German producer of biochar. The Offenhausen plant combines sewage sludge drying with pyrolysis, giving the construction group direct access to biochar production and circular waste-to-material technology.

What's the endgame? STRABAG frames the move as an expansion of its portfolio for sustainable building materials. Since 2023 the group has built a dedicated unit to develop renewable and mineral raw materials, technical carbon, and CO₂-reduced concrete.

Why now? Biochar is emerging as a tool for carbon removal and for producing greener construction inputs. Taking control of a producer lets STRABAG secure differentiated low-carbon materials in-house rather than sourcing them externally.

The signal: The deal fits a wider pattern of STRABAG moving into climate-oriented infrastructure technologies beyond core construction, following its €100 million equity commitment to energy storage specialist CMBlu Energy in 2024–25. As a major contractor takes control of a biochar producer, it positions itself to tap premium, climate-linked projects.
