BTRY, Perovskia Solar win €2.2M EIC grants for battery-free tech push

What's the deal? Two EmpaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → spin-offs — battery startup BTRYDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and cleantech company Perovskia Solar — have each secured €2.2 million in non-dilutive funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC). The EIC Accelerator grants will help industrialize BTRY's thin-film solid-state batteries and Perovskia's indoor photovoltaics.

What do they do? BTRY, a spin-off from ETH Zürich and EmpaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, builds thin-film solid-state batteries for IoT, medtech, wearable, and consumer electronics uses. Perovskia makes digitally printed perovskite photovoltaic cells that power IoT devices and smart electronics without disposable batteries.

Why it stands out: BTRY's grant ranks in the 95th percentile among all-time grant rounds for Swiss IoT startups, based on a sample of 89 comparable deals.

What's the money for? BTRY plans to scale its solvent-free vacuum coating process — which uses established roll-to-roll equipment from the semiconductor industry — toward a factory producing millions of batteries a year. Perovskia is targeting better efficiency, durability, and manufacturing capacity for indoor photovoltaics.

Why now? Both wins come from the same EIC Accelerator round, one of Europe's most competitive deeptech programs. Only 38 startups were selected across Europe, at a success rate below 5%, after a multi-stage review by scientists, industry experts, and investors.

Four Swiss startups made the cut in this round, including BTRY and Perovskia. The program indicated €90 million in grants, with a further €202 million potentially available for equity across the selected companies.

The signal: The wins reflect a broader spring-summer pattern of European deeptech and cleantech startups securing non-dilutive support in battery, energy-harvesting, and manufacturing technologies. For capital-intensive hardware companies, EIC backing is one of the region's most visible validation signals — and two Swiss spin-offs landing it in the same round points to momentum in Switzerland's cleantech pipeline rather than a one-off headline.
