Givaudan takes a stake in ETH spin-off Microcaps to build out fragrance tech

What's the deal? GivaudanDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has taken a stake in Swiss technology company Microcaps to strengthen its encapsulation capabilities for the perfume and beauty business, the flavours and fragrances maker said on Tuesday. Financial details of the strategic partnership were not disclosed.

What does Microcaps do? Founded in 2019, Microcaps is an ETH Zurich spin-off with a patented microencapsulation technology designed to make alcohol-free perfumes more effective.

How it works: Microencapsulation traps tiny fragrance molecules inside microscopic shells made of biodegradable materials. That makes scents last longer and lets them release in a controlled way — a technique used in perfumes, personal care, and cosmetics products.

What's the endgame? The move deepens a relationship that predates the deal: Givaudan has worked with Microcaps on microencapsulation for flavours and fragrances to achieve precise particle sizes and controlled release at industrial scale. Owning a slice of that technology secures proprietary tools for stable, controlled-release formulations rather than a research partnership alone.

Why now? The stake lands as Givaudan expands aggressively in scent. In early June 2026 it agreed to a majority stake in Spanish fragrance house EurofraganceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, which would have contributed roughly 185 million CHF to Givaudan's revenue on a pro forma 2025 basis; those terms were also undisclosed.

The signal: Givaudan is integrating its innovation chain from creative fragrance houses down to core encapsulation technology. Against rivals such as FirmenichDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, IFFDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and SymriseDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, control of differentiating technology is becoming as strategic as buying up brands.
