Why it matters: The deal adds a deep-pocketed strategic investor to an operator already funded by leading institutional players. It signals how large industrial and financial groups are competing with private equity and infrastructure funds for exposure to AI-ready data centres in Europe.
What's the endgame? Kao Data positions itself as a specialist in AI and high-performance computing. "This investment reflects our continued focus on digital infrastructure as a core pillar of our equity strategy, supporting the growth of AI and high-performance computing," Siemens said in a statement.
Why now? Capital is flowing into UK and European data centre platforms geared to AI and high-performance computing. In January 2024, Kao Data secured a £206 million debt facility from Deutsche BankDealroom has a profile for this one. The company is planning major builds, including a £350 million data centre in Greater Manchester. In June 2026, it landed a 22MW capacity deal from neocloud NebiusDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.
Power play: Alongside the investment, Kao Data renewed its renewable electricity supply agreement with Shell Energy, a fourth year of collaboration. Since 2022, Shell Energy has supplied Kao Data with around 140 gigawatt hours of electricity each year.
"Our collaboration with Shell Energy has been instrumental in shaping our long-term energy management and decarbonization strategy," said James Lewis, investment director at Kao Data. He added that the extension "reinforces our commitment to become carbon-neutral by 2030."
The signal: Power-dense, sustainable data centres are becoming critical infrastructure, and the race to secure them is drawing in strategic backers beyond traditional funds. Siemens joining Kao Data's roster is another marker of how capital is scaling to meet AI-driven demand across core European markets.
