StarCharge backs Egen Energy's SOFC and SOEC push with tens of millions of RMB

What's the endgame? Founded in 2020, Egen Energy builds both solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power systems and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) hydrogen production systems. It is one of few Chinese companies delivering both at scales from hundreds of kilowatts to multiple megawatts, backed by more than 90 patent filings.

Where does the money go? The proceeds will expand manufacturing at Egen's Changzhou base, boost research and development at its Shanghai headquarters, strengthen its commercial teams, and fund demonstration projects in key global markets. The company already runs China's first automated SOC stack line, rated at 100MW annual capacity, plus a facility producing 300,000 cells a year.

Why now? The raise lands as demand climbs for high-efficiency distributed power and green hydrogen. Rapid growth in AI data centre infrastructure, plus policy support for hydrogen systems, is opening commercial ground for both SOFC and SOEC technologies.

The expansion angle: Backing Egen extends StarCharge's global build-out beyond batteries. It signed around 3.5 GWh of energy storage agreements at EES Europe 2026 and a 500 MWh order in Eastern Europe, while building service networks across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America.

The signal: The deal points to convergence between electrochemical conversion and large-scale storage platforms. By pairing Egen's SOC technology with StarCharge's microgrid reach, both companies are positioning for emerging segments such as industrial decarbonisation and green hydrogen.
