Wiese-led Titan invests R350M in SA lender Preference Capital

What's the deal? Titan Premier Investments, controlled by South African retail billionaire Dr Christo WieseDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, has invested roughly R350 million (about $21 million) in Preference CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

The financial services group lends to owner-managed and family-run businesses, a segment it calls the country's "missing middle."

The deal strengthens Preference Capital's balance sheet and funds its push deeper into South Africa's mid-market.

Why now? Access to capital remains the biggest bottleneck for local entrepreneurs, chief executive officer Jonathan Goldberg says.

Banks fund large corporates and microlenders serve the low end, but mid-sized firms get stuck between the two.

Preference Capital fills the gap with asset finance, trade finance, and business loans. It offers unsecured loans from R100,000 to R7 million and secured facilities up to R60 million.

What could go wrong? The company serves businesses turning over up to R1 billion, a growth-oriented but credit-hungry segment that can prove risky in a strained economy.

Scaling lending while keeping its bespoke, relationship-driven model intact will test the group as volumes rise.

The signal: Preference Capital, still classified as an early-stage lender, has already funded over 10,500 businesses totalling more than R10 billion — and Wiese's backing signals growing investor conviction that owner-run firms are the most resilient building block of the economy, and that private lenders, not banks, will close the mid-market funding gap.
