Materna Medical raises $5M to bring pelvic health device Ellora to market

What's the deal? Materna Medical has closed a $5 million Series B round to advance its women's pelvic health products toward commercialisation.

The round was led by InnovaHealth PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Wavemaker Three-Sixty HealthDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Band of AngelsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, with backing from existing investors.

The Mountain View, California company will use the capital to complete its EASE pivotal trial readout, expand access for its Milli device, and build commercial manufacturing.

Why now? Materna is preparing to launch Ellora, an investigational device designed to reduce pelvic floor muscle injury during vaginal delivery in first-time mothers.

The company says its first-in-class reimbursement code is now active, clearing a key hurdle for market access.

"We are thrilled to be entering this next phase as we prepare for the Ellora launch," said Tracy MacNeal, chief executive officer of Materna Medical.

What could go wrong? Ellora remains investigational and depends on results from the EASE trial, a large randomised study running across 20 US hospitals.

A weak readout could stall the launch and undercut the manufacturing and market-access investments now underway.

The signal: Now at breakout stage, Materna is betting on a $25 billion women's health market that has long attracted less capital than other areas of medtech. Its playbook — pairing an already-cleared consumer product, Milli, with a higher-stakes clinical device in Ellora — reflects a growing effort to build durable companies in an underfunded corner of healthcare.
