Telum raises $21M Series A to take AI-designed antibiotic into the clinic

What's the deal? Spanish biotech Telum Therapeutics has closed a $21 million Series A to push its lead antimicrobial candidate into human trials.

The Pamplona-based company is targeting hospital- and ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by Acinetobacter baumannii, a multidrug-resistant pathogen that kills hospitalised patients worldwide.

Why now? The cash lets Telum run its lead candidate through Phase 1 trials, generating the safety data needed to advance further.

Its APEX platform combines metagenomic datasets, synthetic biology, and generative AI to design protein-based therapies — a bet that new science can crack a problem where progress has stalled for decades.

What could go wrong? Phase 1 only tests safety, not whether the drug works. Antibiotic development is notoriously slow and capital-hungry, and many candidates fail before reaching patients.

The economics are punishing, too: new antibiotics often earn little because hospitals ration them to slow resistance.

The signal: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest under-funded threats in medicine, and big pharma has largely retreated from the field — leaving specialist backers like AMR Action Fund, the world's largest fund dedicated solely to antimicrobial therapeutics and diagnostics, to carry early-stage bets. Telum's raise signals that AI-driven drug design is becoming part of that fight, and the pairing of a domain-focused lead investor with Spanish backers CDTI and Sodena shows how public and specialist capital is stepping in where generalists won't.
