Melbourne brain-chip startup Fluent raises $2M to give speech back
What's the deal? Fluent, a University of Melbourne spinout building a brain-computer interface to restore speech, has raised AUD$2 million (≈$1.4 million) in a seed round.
The device reads electrical signals in the motor cortex to work out what someone with impaired speech is trying to say.
Founder Dr Mahoney likens the signals to QR codes: every mouth and jaw movement produces a distinct pattern, and Fluent's interface captures them in sequence to decode intended speech.
Why now? The funding follows early human testing at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, where participants wore 144 scalp electrodes while speaking, miming, and imagining phrases.
Partnering with a Japanese team on a larger dataset, Fluent showed a model could isolate the correct phrase from 128 options with 96% accuracy.
The startup will use the cash to fund human clinical trials, with studies of its insertable electrodes planned for later this year.
What could go wrong? Fluent's approach places electrodes beneath or outside the scalp rather than inside the skull, avoiding complex surgery.
But the technology remains at an early stage, and clinical trials will need to prove the results hold beyond preliminary testing.
The signal: Fluent is betting brain-computer interfaces can become as routine and accessible as cochlear implants.
By cutting out invasive brain surgery, it aims to widen access to a technology long confined to high-risk, experimental settings — a sign the field is edging closer to everyday medicine.
