POCKETALK raises late VC at ¥31.24B valuation to expand translation hardware
What's the deal? Tokyo-based POCKETALK has completed a third-party allotment funding round led by Hokkaido software developer agenda inc.
The late VC round values the AI translation company at ¥31.24 billion (approximately $200 million).
POCKETALK, known for its handheld AI interpreter devices, will use the backing to expand a new lineup of hardware aimed at businesses and public institutions.
Why now? Japan faces rising demand for multilingual support, driven by inbound tourism, more foreign workers, and growing needs in government, healthcare, and education.
The company is rolling out three products: "POCKETALK X," a stationary simultaneous translator for face-to-face service desks; "POCKETALK mimi 2," a voice-to-text device for communicating with hearing-impaired users; and "POCKETALK V," which turns any display into a live multilingual subtitle screen.
POCKETALK X launches in 2026, with rental plans from ¥20,000 per month or a ¥400,000 one-time purchase.
What could go wrong? POCKETALK is still reshaping its overseas operations, where it has prioritised profitability over growth.
It reports a ¥300 million annual profit improvement in Europe and expects over ¥600 million in gains in the US. Sustaining that turnaround while funding new hardware investment remains the challenge.
The signal: Backing from a corporate software developer rather than a traditional VC underscores POCKETALK's pivot from a breakout-stage consumer hardware brand toward enterprise systems integration, where agenda inc.'s applications expertise could help embed translation devices into business and public-sector workflows.
