RWE raises €1.5B in oversubscribed green bond

What's the deal? German energy giant RWEDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has issued a green bond worth €1.5 billion, split into two equal tranches of €750 million each.

The first tranche carries a six-year tenor and a 3.375% coupon; the second runs 11 years with a 4.000% coupon.

Net proceeds will fund RWE's investment programme under its Green Financing Framework.

Why now? Investor demand was strong, with the order book oversubscribed several times.

That appetite let RWE lock in funding for renewable projects as it pushes ahead with a large capital programme.

What could go wrong? Longer-dated debt comes at a cost: the 11-year tranche yields 4.052%, against 3.497% for the shorter one.

Rising rates or weaker green project returns could squeeze the economics of debt-funded expansion.

The signal: As a mature player and one of Europe's five leading electricity and gas companies, RWE is using its scale and credit standing to tap green debt markets at a level few startups could reach. The several-times oversubscription underscores that investor appetite for clean-energy financing remains concentrated among established utilities driving the energy transition.
