Sony raises $1B in first US-registered bond sale

What's the deal? SonyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised $1 billion through its first US-registered bond offering, a milestone for the Tokyo-based conglomerate.

The deal splits into $500 million of 4.657% senior notes due 2031 and $500 million of 5.089% senior notes due 2036.

The offering launched on June 22, 2026, and priced a day later. It is expected to close on June 30, 2026.

Why now? Tapping US debt markets for the first time gives Sony direct access to American investors and a deeper pool of capital.

The move broadens its funding sources beyond Japan, where it has long financed itself.

What could go wrong? The notes carry interest rates above 4.6%, reflecting a higher-cost borrowing environment.

Sony will need to service that debt across the next decade, with the 2036 notes priced at over 5%.

The signal: The debut reflects how even mature conglomerates like Sony, long financed at home in Japan, are diversifying their funding sources by tapping US debt markets directly. For a company spanning consumer electronics and entertainment, deeper access to American capital underpins its global ambitions in technology and content.
