Altillion raises $5M to mine critical minerals from oilfield wastewater

What's the deal? Altillion has closed a $5 million seed round to commercialise technology that extracts iodine, lithium, copper, and other critical minerals from oilfield produced water, geothermal brines, and salars.

The Tulsa- and Houston-based startup uses its proprietary IRIS and ALIX platforms to pull minerals from wastewater on site, without disrupting existing operations.

Why now? The oil and gas industry generates roughly one trillion gallons of produced water annually — a byproduct long treated as a disposal headache rather than an asset.

Chief executive officer Jay Keener called the investment "very timely given the current geopolitical dynamics," pointing to demand for a domestic supply of minerals used in electronics, batteries, healthcare, and defence.

Altillion also launched a refreshed brand and redesigned website alongside the raise.

What could go wrong? The leap from proven concept to commercial scale is hard-tech's toughest hurdle, as Flathead Forge managing director Doug Lee acknowledged.

The startup must prove its extraction methods work economically at scale across messy, varied feedstocks.

The signal: Though Dealroom frames Altillion around direct lithium extraction for battery-grade products, the startup is pitching a broader play across iodine, copper, bromine, and magnesium — positioning itself at the intersection of water and critical resources that lead investor EIC Rose Rock and Flathead Forge both target. For an early-stage company, that breadth is a hedge against demand swings in any single mineral as the US races to onshore its critical mineral supply chain.
