Nanoflex Robotics wins €12.5M EIC grant for stroke-fighting robots
What's the deal? Swiss medtech startup Nanoflex Robotics has secured €12.5 million from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator, one of Europe's most competitive funding programs.
The package combines a €2.5 million grant with a €10 million equity investment from the EIC Fund.
Nanoflex builds magnetically controlled telerobotic systems that steer ultra-flexible guidewires through blood vessels during minimally invasive procedures. It aims to make complex endovascular interventions faster and safer, especially in stroke treatment.
Why now? The company was picked from roughly 1,000 applicants across 16 EU and associated countries. Just 38 made the cut.
Nanoflex was one of four Swiss startups selected, and the only medical technology firm among them.
The funding will support clinical validation toward CE marking in Europe and the launch of the platform's first version.
What could go wrong? Medtech timelines are long. CE marking and clinical validation can stretch for years, and any setback could delay commercialisation.
The platform also leans on remote, teleoperated procedures, which raise questions around connectivity, regulation, and clinician trust.
The signal: Nanoflex, already a Venture Kick and Venture Leaders alumnus ranked among the Top100 Swiss Startups, has reached breakout stage, and the EIC's blended grant-plus-equity bet reflects how government backers are stepping in where private capital often hesitates on high-risk health hardware. With speed often deciding survival in stroke care, the wager is on robotics that could widen access to specialist endovascular treatment across Europe.
