SatVu launches HotSat-2, closes $40M NATO-backed round
What's the deal? British startup SatVu has launched its second thermal-imaging satellite, HotSat-2, and closed a $40 million early-stage round backed by NATO.

HotSat-3 is slated to launch before the end of 2026.
Launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, HotSat-2 captures mid-wave infrared data at 3.5-metre resolution, day and night. By comparison, Landsat captures thermal data at roughly 100 metres.
While optical and synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellites identify ground features, thermal imaging detects heat signatures to reveal actual activity — refineries, power plants, data centres, or military equipment.
What could go wrong? Hardware is the obvious risk. HotSat-1 reached the same resolution but a camera malfunction ended its mission after six months in orbit, though it proved the commercial case first.
SatVu also faces a crowded field. Germany's OroraTech and constellr and US-based Hydrosat all target thermal imagery, with constellr also monitoring military activity.
Herman said SatVu's niche is high-resolution industrial and facility monitoring for national security and economic intelligence — not wide-area wildfire or flare detection.
The signal: NATO's backing — via its ACT Innovation Hub investment fund — signals where the money is heading: dual-use space data that serves both defence and commercial energy customers. For a company like SatVu, a $40 million round attached to a defence-aligned investor underlines how thermal intelligence is becoming a national-security priority, not just a commercial niche.
