Sony Pictures bets $100M on Cosm's immersive dome venues
What's the deal? Sony Pictures EntertainmentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (SPE) is investing $100 million in Cosm, an immersive media company that runs dome-shaped venues using its "Shared Reality" technology.
The deal makes SPE the lead investor in Cosm's Series C round and gives it a minority stake. SPE Chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja will join Cosm's board.
Cosm runs three US venues — in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Atlanta — that blend physical and virtual worlds to show sports and entertainment.
Why now? Cosm is scaling fast. A fourth venue opens in Detroit this September, with Cleveland to follow early next year and more domestic and international sites planned.
For SPE, the timing fits a wider push into experiential entertainment and fandom. The studio wants new ways to extend its film and TV properties beyond screens.
"Cosm sits at the intersection of several trends shaping the future of entertainment," Ahuja said.
What could go wrong? Dome venues are capital-intensive, and rapid expansion carries execution risk. Filling immersive spaces with paying fans across many cities is no sure thing.
SPE's bet also depends on translating its IP — across films, TV, music, and games — into experiences audiences will pay to attend.
The signal: Hollywood is chasing growth beyond the box office. As streaming margins tighten, studios are betting on physical, immersive experiences to deepen fan engagement.
Sony's move signals that owning compelling IP is no longer enough; the race is on to bring it to life in new formats. Goldman Sachs and Allen & Company advised Cosm on the deal.
