Ludoil Energy issues €40M green bond for Sicilian biomethane plant
What's the deal? Ludoil EnergyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has issued a €40 million green bond to fund a new biomethane plant in the Dittaino industrial estate, near Enna in Sicily.
The seven-year bond was fully underwritten by Crédit Agricole ItaliaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and UniCredit, which acted as co-arrangers. It is backed by SACEDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s Archimede Guarantee.
The EngasDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → plant will treat roughly 69,000 tonnes of waste annually and produce over 5 million standard cubic metres of biomethane per year, fed into the national grid.
Why now? The project benefits from Italy's Biomethane Decree of September 15, 2022, which incentivises new plants fuelled by organic waste.
The scheme aligns with national and European policies pushing renewable gas for decarbonisation and energy security.
What could go wrong? The plant depends on a steady supply of organic feedstock: 51,000 tonnes of Forsu, the organic fraction from separate waste collection, plus 18,000 tonnes of green waste each year.
For Ludoil, a company rooted in traditional energy, biomethane marks a bet on a sector where execution and feedstock logistics remain unproven at scale.
The signal: Backing from two corporate lenders, Crédit Agricole Italia and UniCredit, alongside SACE's state-linked Archimede Guarantee, shows how Italy's energy transition is increasingly financed through bank-underwritten green bonds rather than equity. For Ludoil, a mature group historically rooted in traditional energy, the issue marks a structural pivot toward a renewables platform spanning biomethane, hydrogen, and clean power.
