What's the deal? Sail Research has raised an $80 million Series A led by Kleiner Perkins to build inference infrastructure for autonomous AI agents.
The startup, co-founded by Neil Movva and Samir Menon, targets agents that run for hours rather than seconds across thousands of simultaneous tasks.
Its core product pairs open-source model serving with "Sailboxes" — persistent sandboxed environments that keep agents running continuously in the cloud. Sail claims its platform is 12 times more cost-efficient than proprietary systems.
Why now? AI agents are moving from quick chatbot replies to long, complex jobs, exposing a gap in the infrastructure built to serve them.
Sail launched Sailboxes in April 2026 and says it has already processed trillions of tokens across uses such as cybersecurity analysis and automated code review.
Kleiner Perkins partner Aditya Naganath had developed a thesis on this exact gap before meeting Movva. "It felt obvious to both of us that you're going to need a different, specific inference platform built for these long-running agents," he told Fortune.
What could go wrong? Sail's 12x cost-efficiency claim still needs to hold up in real production environments.
Movva brings experience from NVIDIA, Apple, and Together AI, but the market is crowded with both proprietary providers and decentralised compute networks chasing the same workloads.
The signal: Sail Research, which Dealroom classifies as an early-stage company pitching itself as an AI inference provider for large-scale background agents, has landed an investment fund as established as Kleiner Perkins this early — the kind of concentrated wager the firm reserves for what it sees as category-defining bets. The technical problems Sail tackles map onto the challenges facing decentralised compute networks such as Akash, Render, and io.net, which will need comparable benchmarks to compete for the same workloads.
