CalciMedica raises up to $49M private placement to advance pulmonary hypertension program

What's the deal? CalciMedica, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, has entered a securities purchase agreement for a private placement worth up to $49 million in gross proceeds.

The La Jolla, California-based company will sell over 18.6 million units to new and existing investors, including members of its board and management team.

The structure includes about $15 million upfront, plus Series A and B warrants that could add $15 million and $19 million, respectively, if exercised in full.

Why now? The cash funds a focused pulmonary hypertension strategy built on CalciMedica's calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC) channel inhibition platform.

Proceeds support a Phase 1b proof-of-concept study of its intravenous drug Auxora in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), with data expected mid-2027.

The funding also advances CM5480, an oral CRAC channel inhibitor, toward Investigational New Drug (IND) clearance, also anticipated mid-2027. The company expects cash runway into the second half of 2027.

What could go wrong? Both Series A and Series B warrants require stockholder approval under Nasdaq rules, so the larger sums are far from guaranteed.

The upfront $15 million is modest for a clinical-stage biotech, and runway only stretches to late 2027 — leaving little room if trials slip.

The signal: CalciMedica, a breakout-stage company developing small-molecule drugs for inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, is pivoting that platform toward the multi-billion-dollar pulmonary hypertension market. The warrant-heavy structure — with only $15 million upfront against up to $49 million if milestones unlock — shows investors still back novel-mechanism bets in cardiopulmonary disease, but increasingly through staged commitments that tie payouts to results.
