DEScycle secures €10m+ in non-dilutive grants for critical-metals recovery
What's the deal? DEScycle, a London-based metals recovery startup, has secured more than €10 million (roughly $11.4 million) in non-dilutive grant funding since mid-2025.
The backing spans European and UK innovation programs: €5 million from EU Horizon, €2.5 million from the EIC Accelerator, €1.5 million from Germany's SPRIND, £0.9 million via Innovate UK partnerships, and £0.5 million through a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship.
The money will fund longer operations at its upcoming demo plant, expand customer trials, and integrate new technologies. It will also support digital product passports that trace recovered metals across the supply chain.
Why now? Both the UK and Europe are racing to strengthen critical raw materials supply chains for advanced manufacturing, electrification, and AI infrastructure.
According to DEScycle, demand for secure, traceable, and geographically resilient sources is rising. Yet metals processing infrastructure stays centralised, capital-intensive, and slow to scale.
The company is building a distributed, modular platform to recover critical and precious metals closer to where waste is generated. Starting with electronic waste, it aims to turn above-ground resources into resilient domestic supply.
What could go wrong? The technology remains pre-commercial. Construction of the demo plant in Teesside, England, is underway, with a launch targeted for the second half of 2026.
"This funding helps de-risk deployment by allowing us to run our demo plant for longer, generate more data and make better design decisions before commercial scale-up," says Fred White, DEScycle co-founder and chief commercial officer.
The signal: DEScycle's reliance on non-dilutive grants from EU Horizon, the EIC Accelerator, SPRIND, and Innovate UK reflects how breakout-stage deep-tech ventures are leaning on public innovation programs to de-risk capital-intensive infrastructure before commercial scale-up. With its eco-friendly solvents pitched at low-carbon metal recovery, the company is positioning itself at the intersection of two policy priorities: critical raw materials security and the green transition.
