ESA awards €250k grant to AmbaSat for satellite hydrogen monitoring

The 12-month feasibility study will assess whether a satellite-enabled hydrogen monitoring service is viable for industrial use.

It pairs Teesside's Raman LIDAR research with AmbaSat's remote monitoring, communications and reporting platform. The aim is to determine commercial viability, not to launch a finished product.

Why now? Hydrogen is central to the energy transition, but its expansion brings challenges around safety, monitoring and reporting.

The study will examine ground-based sensing, resilient communications and cloud-based reporting, then explore how to combine them into a practical service that supports green hydrogen infrastructure.

What could go wrong? A feasibility study is no guarantee of a product.

"This study gives us the opportunity to assess whether a useful service can be developed," said AmbaSat chief executive officer Martin Platt. "Our focus is on something practical, credible and commercially relevant."

The team must also weigh real-world requirements and the regulatory context any such service would face.

The signal: By backing an early-stage company like AmbaSat — better known for its satellite kits and educational courses than industrial monitoring — the European Space Agency is using small grants to probe how space tech might serve the clean energy transition. As a government and non-profit investor, the agency is positioned to fund the kind of speculative, pre-commercial research that private capital tends to avoid.
