SEED Innovations backs Fieldwork Robotics with £300k as part of £2.5m raise
What's the deal? SEED InnovationsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has invested £300,000 in Fieldwork RoboticsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Cambridge-based firm building AI-enabled harvesting robots for soft fruit growers.
The deal gives SEED roughly a 3.66% stake. It forms part of a wider £2.5m fundraise.
Fieldwork's robot has four independent arms, each fitted with a patented inflatable membrane that picks fruit without bruising it. The platform also uses 3D vision and ripeness detection, starting with raspberries.
Why now? The cash helps Fieldwork move from technology validation to commercial trials and accelerate farm adoption.
Labour shortages are biting. Up to 30% of soft fruit is lost due to a lack of pickers, hitting grower profits and consumer prices, according to SEED non-executive chair Jim Mellon.
"Fieldwork's berry picking robot offers an innovative and scalable solution to this problem," he said.
What could go wrong? Fieldwork is still early. It must prove its robots work at scale on real farms, where conditions are messy and margins thin.
Commercial trials are the next hurdle, and international expansion adds further execution risk.
The signal: Agriculture is a prime target for physical AI, where robots tackle tasks humans increasingly won't do.
As picker shortages worsen across the UK and beyond, automated harvesting is shifting from lab demo to a real commercial bet.
