Xen Quantum raises seed to build chip-based quantum-secure comms

The company is building chip-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) modules using silicon photonics — a fabrication process already used for mass-producing photonic chips.

Why now? The threat of "harvest-now-decrypt-later" attacks is growing. Adversaries can intercept encrypted data today and store it until quantum computers powerful enough to crack current encryption become available. QKD is the only known security technology that doesn't rely on computational assumptions — it can't be broken by faster computers or better algorithms, now or in the future.

Yet existing QKD systems remain too complex and costly for widespread deployment. Xen Quantum's bet is that silicon photonics can simplify manufacturing enough to make QKD practical at scale, using the same processes that already produce photonic chips in volume.

What could go wrong? QKD faces stiff competition from post-quantum cryptography (PQC), a software-based approach that major governments and companies are already adopting. PQC doesn't require specialised hardware, making it cheaper and easier to deploy across existing infrastructure.

Integrating QKD modules into real-world telecom networks also presents engineering challenges that have tripped up previous efforts. The startup will need to prove that its silicon photonics approach works reliably outside the lab.

The signal: Xen Quantum's syndicate is notable for pairing university tech-transfer capital (Cambridge Enterprise) with semiconductor-specialist accelerators (Silicon Catalyst, Berkeley SkyDeck) and a quantum-focused fund (QAI Ventures) — a combination that suggests investors see the manufacturability gap, not the underlying science, as the real bottleneck in QKD commercialisation. If silicon photonics can collapse the cost curve the way it did for datacentre transceivers, the early-stage startup could position itself ahead of incumbents still reliant on bespoke optical assemblies.
