Poland's BGK joins ElevenLabs' Series D extension with $11M investment

"Artificial intelligence is changing the global economy the way electricity and the internet once did. Poland cannot stand on the sidelines," said Polish finance minister Andrzej Domański.
Why now? ElevenLabs was co-founded by Polish entrepreneurs — a fact that has not gone unnoticed by Warsaw. Prime minister Donald Tusk has publicly named the founders among Poles who "conquered the world." The investment signals Poland's ambition to capitalise on homegrown AI talent before it drifts entirely into foreign hands.
AI Lab Poland aims to identify and back Polish startups building AI technology with global potential, offering them access to expert knowledge, mentorship, and growth capital. The project also includes academic programmes and internship pipelines to develop domestic AI skills.
What could go wrong? State-backed investment vehicles don't always move at startup speed. BGK is a development bank, not a venture fund — and the gap between institutional mandates and the demands of fast-scaling AI companies can create friction. There's also the question of whether a $11M cheque, modest by AI standards, buys meaningful influence in a company now valued at $11B.
Building a national AI ecosystem from scratch is hard. Poland has strong technical talent but lacks the deep venture infrastructure of the US or UK. AI Lab Poland will need to prove it can deliver more than branding.
The signal: ElevenLabs has reached late stage at a pace that underscores how quickly AI voice synthesis has moved from niche to platform-scale. BGK's entry — classified as a corporate investor rather than a traditional VC — fits a widening pattern of non-venture capital flowing into marquee AI rounds, where strategic alignment matters as much as cheque size. For Poland, the bet is that anchoring even a small institutional stake in a homegrown $11B company can catalyse a domestic AI ecosystem that, so far, has produced standout founders but not the venture infrastructure to keep them.
