energiedigital lands first external capital in seed round from Abu Dhabi

What's the deal? energiedigital, the Graz-based startup behind an all-in-one platform for setting up, managing and billing renewable energy communities, has raised its first-ever external capital. Founded in 2022 by Martin Moser, Andreas Zobl and Stefano Coss, the company had until now grown entirely on equity, public funding and cashflow. In this seed round, Ali Siddiqui — chairman of Pakistan's JS Bank — comes on board via an Abu Dhabi connection, taking a 50% stake. The exact size of the round was not disclosed.

Why now? The European energy sector is digitalising fast as households and grid operators organise into energy communities and chase dynamic electricity tariffs. energiedigital is using the fresh capital to develop its product further and, above all, to scale up sales — targeting Spain, France and the UK, where smart-meter rollout and the regulatory framework make for the easiest early wins. The roughly ten-person team is set to grow to 20 by year-end.

The signal: Gulf-based investors continue to diversify beyond oil and gas into European cleantech. The contact to the Emirates came about via NEOS co-founder Veit Dengler, who is connected to both the investor and co-founder Coss. For Austrian startups, the deal underlines that credible energy-tech propositions can attract international backers well outside the usual Berlin, London and Paris corridors.
