WhyBrilliant raises €1M pre-seed to reinvent recruiting with voice AI

What's the deal? Berlin-based HR tech startup WhyBrilliantDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised €1M in a pre-seed round led by Merantix CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The company plans to use the funding to expand its AI-powered recruiting platform, grow its team, and push into new European markets.

WhyBrilliant's pitch: instead of candidates mass-applying to jobs, companies effectively apply to talent. Two AI agents power the model. One, called "Nova," scans over a million open positions in Germany daily to find roles matching a candidate's skills and aspirations. The other, "Atlas," analyses open roles on the company side and builds lists of pre-qualified candidates. Contact is made only when both agents see a fit.

Why now? Co-founders Patrick Böert and Aleksander Heimrath believe voice AI has reached a tipping point. Rather than relying on CVs and keyword filters, WhyBrilliant conducts in-depth voice conversations with candidates to build richer skills and personality profiles.

The timing also reflects deeper frustration with existing recruitment mechanics. Job boards monetise clicks, recruiters earn from placements, and career advisers bill for time — none of which necessarily optimise for fit. WhyBrilliant argues this misalignment creates waste on both sides: candidates send dozens of applications with little feedback, while companies drown in unqualified pipelines.

What could go wrong? The recruitment tech space is crowded, and incumbents like LinkedIn and IndeedDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → have massive data moats. Convincing employers to trust AI-driven voice assessments over traditional screening will require proving the system reduces bad hires, not just speeds up the funnel.

There are also regulatory questions. The EU's AI Act imposes strict requirements on AI systems used in employment decisions, a category that WhyBrilliant's agents would likely fall under. Compliance costs could weigh on a startup at this early stage.

The signal: WhyBrilliant's pre-seed arrives as European AI-native HR startups compete to replace legacy job-matching workflows, yet the round's modest size reflects how early voice-based recruiting remains. Merantix Capital, an investment fund spun out of Berlin's Merantix AI venture studio, has a focused thesis on applied AI infrastructure — its sole backing here suggests a conviction bet that conversational AI in recruitment is ready to move from experiment to product, even as the company is still firmly at the early stage.
