Cortea raises €12M seed led by Dawn Capital to bring AI agents to audit review
What's the deal? Cortea, a London-based startup building AI agents for audit review, has raised €12M in a seed round led by Dawn CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, with Cherry Ventures, Mosaic VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and angel investors also participating. Among the angels is Larry Bradley, the former global head of audit at KPMG.
Founded in 2024 by Valentin Neumann and Philipp Hövelmann, Cortea focuses on the final review stage of external audits — the riskiest moment before a report is filed. Its AI agents check audit reports, financial statements, disclosure notes, and workpapers against supporting documents to spot inconsistencies and compliance problems. A review that typically takes auditors several days takes Cortea's agents minutes.
In the latest audit season, the company's agents reviewed more than 4,000 audit reports and flagged issues in every single one.
Why now? UK audit reform has been underway for years, and the Financial Reporting Council has stepped up scrutiny after high-profile failures. Firms face growing regulatory pressure and limited capacity — exactly the gap Cortea wants to fill.
"The audit profession is about to undergo one of the biggest shifts in its history. AI will transform how audits are executed, but it will also raise the bar for quality, consistency, and professional oversight," said Neumann, Cortea's chief executive officer.
The global AI-in-audit market was worth $1B in 2023 and is projected to reach $11.7B by 2033, growing at nearly 28% annually.
What could go wrong? Audit is a trust-heavy profession. If AI tools produce false positives, miss real issues, or prove difficult to trace, firms may hesitate to adopt them at scale. Bradley acknowledged the stakes: "If AI cannot improve quality, transparency, and professional judgement, it has no place in the audit process."
Competition is also heating up. AuditBoard, acquired by Hg in 2024 after raising over $200M, covers broader audit management. Workiva handles compliance for listed companies, and TeamMateDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → serves internal audit teams. Cortea's narrow focus on the final external review stage is a differentiator — but also a constraint on its addressable market.
The signal: Dawn Capital, a fund known for backing European B2B software winners, leading a €12M seed into a company founded only in 2024 underscores how quickly investor appetite is growing for AI applied to regulated professional services. With UK audit reform accelerating and firms struggling to scale quality checks against rising scrutiny, Cortea's narrow bet on the final review stage positions it at the highest-stakes — and highest-willingness-to-pay — point in the audit workflow.
