HANAMII raises pre-seed from ANRI to scale its domestic Japanese PaaS
What's the deal? HANAMIIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a startup based in Nago, Okinawa, has raised a pre-seed round from ANRIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, one of Japan's leading independent seed-stage venture capital firms. The investment marks the first deal under ANRI's newly launched pre-seed programme, which it created alongside its sixth fund — described as one of Japan's largest independent seed funds — in January 2026.
HANAMII builds hanamii, a domestically hosted Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that runs on Sakura Internet's cloud infrastructure. The product promises average deploy times of 45 seconds and keeps all data within Japanese data centres.
The company had already closed a round from seven prominent angel investors in March 2026. ANRI's backing adds institutional VC support to the cap table.
Why now? Japan's digital trade deficit hit a record ¥6.7T in 2024, driven largely by spending on foreign cloud services. That figure has fuelled a growing push for domestic alternatives, especially in sectors where data sovereignty matters — government, healthcare, and public infrastructure.
ANRI general partner Shunsuke Nakaji said the programme was designed for exactly this kind of early, high-uncertainty bet. "A domestic PaaS could become an essential piece as AI develops and spreads," he said, pointing to rising demand for data sovereignty.
What could go wrong? Competing with global hyperscalers — AWSDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Google CloudDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Azure — is a daunting task for any startup, let alone a pre-seed one. HANAMII will need to prove it can match international platforms on developer experience while carving out a defensible niche around domestic data compliance.
The company is also very young, founded only in November 2025. Scaling enterprise and public-sector features such as security auditing and compliance tooling will require significant engineering investment.
The signal: HANAMII is still at the earliest stage — classified as early stage on Dealroom with no prior institutional backing before this round — making ANRI's choice to debut its pre-seed programme with a cloud infrastructure play a deliberate statement of thesis. With Japan's digital trade deficit hitting a record ¥6.7T in 2024 and much of that flowing to foreign cloud providers, domestic PaaS is shifting from policy aspiration to a category that top-tier seed investors are willing to underwrite before product-market fit is proven.
