ThunderBio closes Series B+ to scale its digital PCR diagnostics

The company specialises in microfluidics-based in vitro diagnostics. Its flagship product, the Nebula Digital PCR system, digitises traditional medical test results for use in treatment guidance and drug selection.

Why now? Digital PCR technology is gaining traction as healthcare systems worldwide push for more precise, quantitative diagnostics. ThunderBio has built proprietary instrument platforms, reagent systems, and what it describes as a globally leading biochip factory — infrastructure that requires significant capital to scale.

China's diagnostic market is also increasingly favouring domestic suppliers with self-developed core technologies, giving homegrown players like ThunderBio a strategic tailwind.

What could go wrong? The digital PCR market is competitive, with established global players already commercialising similar systems. ThunderBio will need to prove its technology can match or exceed incumbents on accuracy, cost, and regulatory approvals — both in China and in any international markets it targets.

Scaling manufacturing of biochips and instruments is capital-intensive, and the company may need further rounds before reaching profitability.

The signal: The investor mix — heavy on Shanghai-based state-linked funds — reflects China's broader strategy of channelling public capital into domestically developed medtech. As geopolitical tensions push Chinese healthcare towards self-sufficiency in critical diagnostic tools, companies with proprietary platforms stand to benefit from both policy support and market demand.
