Wuhan Supermag closes $10M angel round for helium-free superconducting magnets

What's the deal? Wuhan Supermag Technology, a Chinese startup specialising in conduction-cooled superconducting magnets, has closed a $10M angel round. Leaguer Innovation led the deal, with East Star Innovation following.

The funds will go toward team expansion, R&D, and scaling production capacity.

Why now? Superconducting magnets are critical components in controlled nuclear fusion, quantum research, and high-end medical imaging — all sectors attracting heavy investment in China. Supermag's core technology comes from the National Pulsed High Magnetic Field Science Centre at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, led by researcher Song Yunxing, who serves as the company's chief scientist.

Song spent 15 years in superconducting magnet R&D, including a stint as a senior engineer at General ElectricDealroom has a profile for this one. The company has already achieved small-batch delivery of its "helium-free and frameless" magnets to customers across quantum science, medical, industrial, and fusion applications.

Next on the roadmap: the first conduction-cooled superconducting magnet for controlled nuclear fusion and a 7.0T low-helium MRI magnet system.

What could go wrong? Superconducting magnet manufacturing is notoriously difficult to scale. Moving from small-batch delivery to volume production will test the startup's engineering and supply chain capabilities. The fusion market, while promising, remains pre-commercial — meaning near-term revenue likely depends on medical and industrial customers.

Geopolitical tensions could also complicate access to specialised materials and international partnerships, particularly given the dual-use nature of advanced magnet technology.

The signal: China is aggressively building domestic capability in superconducting technology to reduce dependence on imported systems and scarce liquid helium. Supermag's helium-free approach addresses both goals at once. Li Yao from Yangtze Leaguer called superconducting magnets "the core fulcrum of the controlled nuclear fusion revolution." With fusion startups worldwide racing to build viable reactors, the companies supplying critical components like high-performance magnets stand to benefit regardless of which fusion design wins out.
