OpenAI acquires cloud platform Ona to power its AI agents

What's the deal? OpenAI has agreed to acquire Ona, the cloud infrastructure startup formerly known as Gitpod, to bolster its fast-growing Codex platform. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal, which hasn't yet closed, will bring Ona's team — led by co-founder and chief executive officer Johannes Landgraf — into OpenAI's Codex effort.

Ona's technology provides secure, persistent cloud environments where AI agents can keep working even after a user closes their laptop. The acquisition is designed to let Codex handle longer, more ambitious tasks that unfold over hours or days rather than minutes.

Why now? Codex usage has surged 400% this year, with more than 5 million people now using it weekly. The tool started as a software development assistant but has expanded into broader knowledge work — research, analysis, and automation.

When Ona rebranded from Gitpod last September, observers noted it requires full read/write access to GitHub repositories — meaning risks from prompt injection and other attacks persist even in sandboxed environments.
