Buzz Solutions wins $100K HearstLab grant to expand AI inspections into solar

What's the deal? Buzz Solutions, a Palo Alto-based AI software company focused on energy infrastructure, has won $100,000 in equity-free grant funding from HearstLabDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s 2026 AI Pitch & Showcase. The grant will fund the expansion of its PowerAI visual intelligence platform into utility-scale solar inspections.

The pitch competition, held during NY Tech Week, brought together five AI companies from HearstLab's portfolio. Each presented 90-day plans for new AI features designed to address customer needs and unlock growth. Buzz Solutions won for its plan to extend its asset analytics platform — already used for grid transmission and distribution — into solar.

"Winning this grant is an honour and a meaningful validation of our team's work to help utilities modernise inspections with practical, field-ready technology," said Kaitlyn Albertoli, chief executive officer and co-founder.

Why now? Utility-scale solar is booming, and with it comes a massive inspection headache. Solar sites can span hundreds of acres and include millions of panels, generating vast volumes of imagery that are impractical to review manually.

Buzz Solutions' expanded capabilities will help teams detect thermal anomalies across PV panels, connectors, combiner boxes, and inverters, as well as visual issues like cracked panels, soiling, and vegetation encroachment. The platform maps findings into GIS and asset management systems, shifting utilities from manual review to data-driven maintenance.

What could go wrong? A $100,000 grant is modest by any measure. Scaling AI-powered inspection tools across an industry as sprawling and regulation-heavy as energy infrastructure demands significant capital, customer trust, and integration work. Competing with larger players or well-funded startups in the cleantech inspection space will require more resources.

The equity-free structure is a plus — Buzz Solutions gives up no ownership — but it also signals a stage where the company may still need to prove commercial traction before raising larger rounds.

The signal: Buzz Solutions remains at the early stage, according to Dealroom, making this equity-free grant a low-dilution boost as it tries to prove commercial traction in solar before pursuing larger rounds. HearstLab, operating as an investment fund within the HearstDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → ecosystem, has carved out a niche backing women-led ventures — and its bet here underscores growing investor conviction that AI-driven inspection tools will be essential infrastructure as the US races to deploy utility-scale solar at unprecedented speed.
