The startup's core product, GelCast, is a robotic platform that automates the expansion microscopy (ExM) workflow. Paired with GelMap, a fluorescent nanoscale sample grid developed at Utrecht University, and GelPlate, a dedicated well plate for manual ExM, the suite enables nanoscale imaging on conventional light microscopes.
"This investment will help to accelerate product development and commercialization, bringing reliable nanoscale imaging to more laboratories worldwide," said chief executive Floris van der Staaij.
Why now? Expansion microscopy is gaining traction as a cheaper alternative to electron microscopy, but the workflow remains manual, inconsistent, and hard to scale. Visualise.bio aims to solve that bottleneck with automation and quality control — arriving at a moment when demand for high-resolution imaging is growing across organoid research, connectomics, and diagnostics.
The company has also secured grant funding alongside the seed round, giving it a dual runway to push toward commercialisation.
What could go wrong? The market for research instrumentation is notoriously slow to adopt new workflows. Convincing labs already invested in existing microscopy setups to switch — or add — a new platform will require robust validation data and peer endorsement. Competition from established microscopy companies that could develop their own ExM automation is another risk.
The signal: Visualise.bio is early stage, but the investment thesis mirrors a recurring European pattern: backing university spin-offs that aim to turn specialist lab techniques into scalable, automated products. Graduate Ventures, which channels capital from a network of Dutch university-linked founders, and Utrecht Holdings Seed Fund, which backs Utrecht University research exclusively, are both making a bet that expansion microscopy's moment is arriving — and that the bottleneck is not the science but the tooling to make it reproducible at scale.
