Nanordica Medical raises €1.6 million to launch nanotech wound dressing

Why now? Around 100 million people worldwide live with chronic wounds that fail to heal, and more than half become infected — often leading to sepsis, amputation, or death. Diabetic foot ulcers alone cause someone to lose a leg every 20 seconds.
Current treatments are falling short. Systemic antibiotics, the only option recommended by treatment guidelines for infected wounds, often fail to reach wound sites at sufficient concentrations. Their use is also increasingly restricted due to rising antimicrobial resistance.
Existing antibacterial dressings fare no better — most lack clinical evidence, and many contain such high concentrations of antibacterial agents that they damage healthy skin cells, delaying healing.
What could go wrong? Nanordica's published pilot study involved only 30 patients — a small sample. The company is now running a multicentre, double-blind, randomised clinical trial with more than 120 patients enrolled, one of the largest of its kind. But regulatory approval and broader clinical validation remain ahead.
Medtech startups also face long commercialisation timelines and stiff competition from established wound-care players with deep distribution networks.
The signal: Nanordica Medical's €1.6 million raise spotlights a persistent gap in the chronic wound-care market, where existing antibacterial dressings remain largely absent from clinical guidelines due to a lack of robust evidence. The startup, classified by Dealroom as "early growth," is attempting to leapfrog that credibility deficit with one of the largest randomised clinical trials in the space — a bet that hard clinical data, rather than incremental product iteration, is the fastest route to adoption in a market shaped by antimicrobial resistance and surging diabetes prevalence.
