Element Biosciences raises upsized $175M Series E with Samsung Electronics backing
What's the deal? Element Biosciences, a genomics and multiomics technology company, has announced an upsized Series E financing round that includes $175 million from longstanding investor Samsung ElectronicsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, plus an undisclosed amount from other investors. The funding will accelerate commercialisation of its growing portfolio of sequencing and multiomics products, expand its global footprint, and advance its pipeline across research and clinical diagnostics.
Why now? Since launching its first sequencing system, AVITI, in 2022, Element has expanded well beyond sequencing into a broader ecosystem of genomic, transcriptomic, protein, spatial, and cellular analysis tools. It now serves customers in more than 40 countries.
The company has several product launches on the horizon — including VITARI, a high-throughput benchtop system; AVITI Dx for diagnostics; and tissue profiling on AVITI24. The capital injection arrives just as Element needs to scale commercialisation of these new platforms.
The round follows a $277 million Series D closed in July 2024, signalling sustained investor appetite even as many life science companies struggle with a tough market.
What could go wrong? The life sciences tools sector remains under pressure, with labs tightening budgets and instrument purchases slowing industry-wide. Element must convince customers to adopt its platforms over entrenched competitors in next-generation sequencing — a market long dominated by Illumina.
The financing is also subject to regulatory approval, adding a layer of uncertainty to the timeline.
The signal: Samsung Electronics' repeat backing of Element Biosciences — a corporate investor doubling down at the late growth stage — reflects a strategic conviction that sequencing infrastructure will underpin the next wave of precision medicine and diagnostics. With $175 million on top of participation in earlier rounds, the commitment is notable at a time when life science tools companies are broadly struggling to attract capital, suggesting that investors see Element's open, multi-product platform as a credible challenge to the incumbents that have long dominated the space.
