Skyfora raises €6.5M Series A to turn telecom networks into a real-time weather sensing layer for AI forecasting

What's the deal? Skyfora, a Finnish weather data startup, has raised €6.5 million to scale its atmospheric sensing network — one that piggybacks on existing telecom infrastructure rather than deploying new hardware. The company's software-only approach converts mobile network infrastructure into real-time weather observation points, generating the high-density atmospheric data that modern AI forecasting models need. Telecom operators get a new revenue stream at no additional operational or infrastructure cost.

Why now? Most of the world's atmosphere remains underobserved. Legacy weather infrastructure can't deliver the spatial or temporal resolution that AI-driven forecasting platforms demand. Meanwhile, climate volatility is increasing the stakes for weather-dependent industries like energy, agriculture, and logistics.

"We're turning existing mobile networks into the data layer for next-generation weather forecasting and climate intelligence," said Fredrik Borgström, Skyfora's chief executive officer.

The company plans to use the funding to accelerate its commercial rollout, striking partnerships with telecom and weather industry players across Europe, the US, and the Middle East. It is preparing to launch its real-time data API and atmospheric intelligence dashboard in mid-2026.

What could go wrong? Skyfora's model depends on telecom operators agreeing to participate — at scale, across multiple geographies. Regulatory environments, data-sharing norms, and commercial incentives vary widely between markets. As GP Andreas Green Rasmussen of Ugly Duckling Ventures noted, the technical feasibility risk has been reduced, but the commercialisation challenge remains.

Competition is another factor. The weather data market is attracting growing interest from both incumbents and startups, and Skyfora will need to move fast to lock in its data advantage before others build similar capabilities.

The signal: Skyfora's investor mix — a Nordic energy corporate vehicle in Eviny Ventures, a deep-tech accelerator in LUMO Labs, and the EIC Fund — reflects growing conviction that the real bottleneck in AI-powered climate tech is proprietary data, not models. Still at early growth stage, the company's ability to convert telecom relationships into a defensible, global atmospheric dataset will determine whether it can outpace incumbents racing to serve the same AI forecasting platforms.
