Granarium Technologies raises €1M pre-seed to commercialise renewable supercapacitors

The company's patented technology upcycles waste wood and agricultural residues into renewable supercapacitors that provide fast-response power storage for grid stabilisation and industrial use. VTT has transferred the underlying technology and IP to the newly established company.
Why now? Grid volatility is rising across Europe as renewable energy and electrification reshape power systems. EU grid codes and resilience frameworks are tightening, and UBS forecasts global energy storage demand to grow by roughly 40% year over year in 2026.
"Storage is no longer just 'backup power' — it is becoming core grid infrastructure," says Jana Budkovskaja, partner at BSV Ventures.
Granarium says its material platform — which binds biocarbon structures using nanocellulose — enables up to 80% lower production capital expenditure compared to conventional solutions. It plans to launch first pilots within six months and begin small-scale commercial production of up to 50 units per year.
What could go wrong? The technology is still pre-commercial, with pilots yet to launch. Scaling from lab-born research to industrial production is notoriously difficult for deep-tech hardware startups, and €1M is a modest war chest for that journey. Supercapacitors also occupy a niche segment of the broader energy storage market, handling short-duration power needs rather than the long-duration storage where most investment is flowing.
The signal: The investor mix here is telling — BSV Ventures, Beamline, and angel networks spanning Finland, Estonia, and Latvia point to a distinctly Baltic-Nordic coalition backing critical raw material alternatives. With the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act pushing to localise supply chains, bio-based energy storage built from waste wood rather than mined lithium or cobalt sits at the intersection of industrial policy and climate tech, a niche where early-stage European deep-tech funding is increasingly concentrating.
