Materialise takes minority stake in Replasia

What's the deal? Materialise, the Belgian 3D printing technology company, has taken a minority stake in Replasia, a Belgian medtech startup developing 3D printed implants and anatomical analysis software for hip preservation surgery. Medtech entrepreneur Andy Christensen co-invested in the deal.

Replasia has two core products: HipStudio, a commercially available anatomical analysis service that helps surgeons with patient-specific pre-operative planning, and the 3D Shelf Implant, a personalised 3D printed device for patients with certain forms of hip dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia — a condition where the hip socket doesn't fully cover the femoral head — leaves the joint unstable. Conventional surgical options for affected young adults tend to be highly invasive with lengthy rehabilitation. Replasia's implant aims to be a less invasive alternative.

Why now? In August 2025, Replasia launched a first-in-human clinical investigation of its 3D Shelf Implant in the Netherlands. The study evaluates the device's safety and performance against current standard procedures for adult hip dysplasia.

Materialise said the investment reflects its view that personalisation in orthopaedic care is shifting upstream — toward preservation rather than replacement. It also complements the company's existing portfolio, which includes patient-specific acetabular implants for complex revision cases.

What could go wrong? The 3D Shelf Implant is still in early clinical testing. Regulatory clearance in both Europe and the US remains ahead, and clinical outcomes will need to demonstrate clear advantages over established surgical procedures to gain surgeon adoption.

The signal: Materialise's corporate investment in an early-growth medtech like Replasia fits a wider pattern of established 3D printing and medical device companies betting on personalised, preservation-first orthopaedics rather than waiting for the replacement market. With its first-in-human trial now underway and ambitions spanning Europe and the US, Replasia's trajectory will test whether that upstream thesis — and the less invasive approach it underpins — can translate into clinical and commercial traction.
