DJ Insight raises ¥30M seed to quantify the 'feel of a room' with Kagami AI

The startup is building Kagami AI, a tool that analyses video and audio from face-to-face settings — such as beauty salons, classrooms, corporate training sessions, and events — to quantify non-verbal cues like facial expressions, tone of voice, concentration levels, and engagement.
The goal: turn "the feel of a room," long left to gut instinct, into structured, actionable data.
Founder Ryuju Saito studied engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan College of Technology and its affiliated graduate school before working in M&A and new business development at Donuts. He previously founded DJ Robotics, a robotics and AI venture that was later sold.
Why now? Online behaviour is tracked obsessively — click rates, dwell time, purchase history. Yet in physical spaces where people interact face to face, most of the information that drives outcomes remains unmeasured. As AI-powered computer vision and audio analysis mature, it is becoming feasible to close that gap at a reasonable cost.
DJ Insight plans to use the funds for R&D on its non-verbal analytics engine, hiring engineers, and expanding pilots — starting with beauty salons before branching into education, events, and retail.
What could go wrong? Capturing and analysing people's facial expressions and voices raises obvious privacy and consent concerns, especially in Japan where data-protection expectations are high. Convincing salon owners or event organisers that customers are comfortable being filmed will be a hurdle.
There is also the question of accuracy. Non-verbal communication is deeply contextual and culturally specific; mistaking a pause for disengagement — or a frown for dissatisfaction — could lead to worse decisions, not better ones.
The signal: The round reflects a broader trend of AI moving from digital-native environments into the physical world. Investors are betting that the same data-driven feedback loops that optimised e-commerce can improve in-person services — from haircuts to lectures.
THE SEED's Taiki Hirosawa called it "a new data infrastructure for real-world communication." If Kagami AI can prove the concept in beauty salons, the template could extend to any industry where human reactions matter — which is to say, most of them.
