Y Tree raises more than £10M, largely backed by its own clients

What's the deal? Y Tree, a technology-focused wealth management firm founded by two former Goldman Sachs bankers, has raised more than £10M in a funding round largely backed by its own clients, the Mail on Sunday reports.

Previous backers of the firm include Simon Robey, co-founder of boutique investment bank Robey Warshaw; Paul Walsh, former Diageo chief executive and current executive chairman of McLaren; and Alan Stewart, former finance chief at Tesco. It is unclear whether any of these investors participated in the latest round.

Why now? Y Tree claims the wealth management industry suffers from a culture of "serial underperformance," arguing that more than 84% of wealth managers "persistently underperform" — costing clients hundreds of thousands of pounds a year in losses.

The firm says it uses technology to provide "analysis, advice and actionable intelligence" to help wealthy clients manage their money more effectively.

What could go wrong? Disrupting wealth management is easier said than done. Incumbents have deep client relationships, regulatory moats, and the inertia of high-net-worth individuals who tend to be conservative about switching advisers. Y Tree's claim that the vast majority of competitors underperform is bold — and will invite scrutiny of its own track record.

The fact that the round was largely funded by existing clients could be read two ways: as a strong vote of confidence, or as a sign that institutional investors weren't lining up.

The signal: Dealroom classifies Y Tree as a "breakout"-stage company, suggesting it has moved beyond early traction even as it relies on angel-type backers — prominent City figures investing in a personal capacity rather than institutional funds. That client-funded model mirrors a wider pattern in UK wealth-tech, where founders bypass traditional VC routes and instead lean on the high-net-worth networks they serve, aligning investor and customer incentives but potentially capping the speed at which they can scale.
