Trag raises R$2.5M extension to build AI climate-risk models for Brazilian agriculture

The startup will use the capital to develop AI models that analyse agricultural climate risks and improve its platform's user experience.
Trag combines NASA satellite data with proprietary AI to measure climate risks and structure parametric insurance — policies that automatically trigger payouts when specific climate indicators hit preset thresholds, eliminating the need for on-site inspections.
The company has evolved beyond pure parametric insurance into a broader "climate-smart platform," providing risk intelligence to farmers, cooperatives, distributors, insurers, and agricultural financiers across eight Brazilian states and eight crop types.
Why now? After its first year of operations, Trag's founders realised the core problem in Brazilian agriculture isn't just lack of insurance access — it's the difficulty of understanding and measuring climate risks in the first place. That insight prompted the strategic pivot.
A visit to Silicon Valley and exchanges with innovation platform Plug and Play helped solidify the AI direction. Trag planned to launch new standalone products that monetise its climate intelligence separately from insurance in late 2025.
What could go wrong? Parametric insurance remains a relatively unfamiliar concept for many Brazilian farmers. The founders themselves acknowledged that educating clients about climate risks is as important as building sound insurance structures — a time-consuming process that could slow adoption.
With just 4.5 million reais in total funding, Trag faces the challenge of scaling across Brazil's vast agricultural landscape while competing with better-capitalised traditional insurers.
The signal: Trag's pivot from pure parametric insurance to a broader climate intelligence platform reflects a growing recognition across Latin American agtech that risk data infrastructure — not just coverage products — is the real bottleneck. Try Dealroom → among the investors, the round draws on Brazil's established early-stage ecosystem, while the 47% jump in insured value to 81 million reais suggests commercial traction even at a modest scale. The bigger bet is whether Trag's 300,000-hectare analytical footprint can be converted into paying customers fast enough to justify a standalone climate-intelligence business.
