CIG Shanghai raises HK$1.98B in H-share placing to stockpile optical-module components
What's the deal? CIG Shanghai (Stock Code: 6166) has completed a placing of 15.6 million new H shares at HK$126.66 per share, raising gross proceeds of approximately HK$1.98B. Net proceeds came to about HK$1.97B after commissions and expenses. The shares were allocated to at least six independent placees, none of whom became substantial shareholders.
The company plans to spend 80% of the proceeds — roughly HK$1.57B — on stockpiling core components for high-speed optical modules, including DSP chipsets for 800G and 1.6T modules, silicon photonics chipsets, and high-power laser devices. The remaining funds will go toward working capital (10%) and general corporate purposes (10%).
Why now? Surging AI infrastructure demand has created severe shortages in optical module components, with lead times stretching out across the supply chain. CIG Shanghai is moving to lock in critical parts before scarcity worsens — a pre-emptive play to stay ahead of competitors facing the same bottlenecks.
What could go wrong? The placing increased total shares outstanding from about 352.7 million to 368.3 million, diluting existing shareholders. The new H shares represent roughly 16.84% of post-issue H shares.
There's also execution risk: stockpiling components is a bet that demand will remain strong. If the AI buildout slows or next-generation standards shift faster than expected, the company could be sitting on inventory it can't use efficiently.
