Phage Consultants secures €531K EU grant to build PhageSense rapid-detection platform

The grant, provided by the Pomeranian Development Agency through the European Funds for Pomerania (FEPM) programme, covers more than two-thirds of the project's estimated total cost of roughly €795,000. The funds will go toward specialised equipment including a nanopore sequencer, anaerobic chamber, autoclave, and fluorometer.
The project is scheduled for completion by August 2029.
Why now? Bacteriophages — viruses that infect bacteria — can devastate fermentation processes used across biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals. Current detection methods are too slow and insufficiently sensitive, leaving manufacturers vulnerable to significant production losses, extended downtime, and in extreme cases, facility closures.
As demand grows for bacteria-dependent products like probiotics and biopharmaceuticals, the need for reliable early-warning systems has become urgent. PhageSense aims to automate detection in bacterial cultures and bioreactors, giving producers a scalable tool to protect their operations.
"This platform will help to solve the problem of the lack of rapid, sensitive methods for detecting infections," said co-founder and chief executive officer Dr. Marcin Łoś. "We hope to implement these solutions on a large scale, and this funding will help us to do that."
What could go wrong? The three-year development timeline means the platform won't reach market until at least 2029. In that window, competitors could develop rival solutions, or the technical challenge of automated phage detection across diverse industrial settings could prove harder than expected.
Scaling from a research project to a commercially viable product adopted across industries is never guaranteed, regardless of how promising the science looks.
