The capital will go towards scaling its technology platform, expanding its driver network, and pushing into new regions.

Founded in 2021 by Avi Maja and Braden Snyman, Breaze offers on-demand and same-day delivery solutions tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises. It uses live-tracking technology and a flexible network of drivers to serve retail partners across South Africa.

Why now? South Africa's e-commerce market continues to expand, and SMEs — the backbone of the country's economy — increasingly need reliable, tech-driven logistics. Breaze says demand from its customer base is rising, making this the right moment to invest in infrastructure and geographic reach.

The Vumela Fund, established over 15 years ago, targets businesses in the "missing middle" — too large for early-stage financing but not yet ready for institutional investment. Breaze fits that profile.

What could go wrong? Last-mile delivery in South Africa is a competitive and operationally complex space. Scaling a driver network across new regions introduces logistical and cost challenges. The startup will also need to maintain service quality as it grows — a common stumbling block for asset-light logistics platforms.

The signal: Edge Growth, the fund manager behind the Vumela Fund, operates as a corporate investor with a track record of backing South African SME-focused businesses, underscoring how dedicated enterprise development vehicles — rather than traditional VC — are emerging as key funding channels for logistics startups on the continent. With last-mile delivery increasingly seen as enabling infrastructure rather than a standalone service, Breaze's ability to embed itself into the SME supply chain could prove more durable than asset-heavy competitors chasing consumer markets.
