Bunch raises $35M to overhaul private market fund operations
What's the deal? Bunch, an AI-native fund operations platform for private markets, has closed a $35M Series B. Portage led the round, with Illuminate Financial joining alongside existing backers Motive Partners, Cherry Ventures, FinTech Collective, and several angel investors.
The Berlin-based startup offers PE and VC fund managers a single digital operating layer spanning the entire fund lifecycle. Its platform handles multi-jurisdictional complexity — ingesting unstructured fund documentation, automating reporting, and replacing the spreadsheets and email chains that still dominate the industry.
Proceeds will fund commercial expansion across Europe, advances in automation and AI capabilities, and extension into new geographies, asset classes, and operational workflows.
Why now? Private market assets under management are projected to hit $32tn by 2030. Regulatory frameworks like ELTIF 2.0 are opening alternative assets to private wealth investors at scale, driving a surge in investor numbers and reporting demands.
That growth has exposed a critical gap: the systems underpinning fund management have largely failed to modernise. Many core workflows still rely on manual intervention, creating bottlenecks that legacy infrastructure cannot solve.
What could go wrong? Bunch is entering a crowded fintech landscape where incumbents and well-funded rivals are also racing to digitise fund operations. Expanding across multiple jurisdictions and asset classes simultaneously adds execution risk — each new market brings its own regulatory quirks and client expectations.
The signal: This raise reflects a broader bet that private markets are entering a new phase — one where operational infrastructure matters as much as deal flow. As the asset class democratises and regulatory complexity deepens, the winners will be platforms that can automate what fund managers still do by hand. Bunch's Series B suggests investors see Europe's fragmented regulatory landscape not as a barrier, but as a moat.
