Automatic Fire to add 100 jobs after Cardinal Capital investment

What's the deal? Cardinal Capital, Ireland's largest private equity fund, has made a significant investment in Automatic Fire, an independent fire-protection firm based in Dublin's Park West. The deal will fund the company's plan to add 100 employees and scale both domestically and internationally.

Automatic Fire designs, installs, commissions, and maintains integrated fire-safety systems. It currently employs 111 people across three divisions: Sprinkler Systems, Gas Suppression & Fire Alarm, and Service & Maintenance.

The company's client list includes Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, ESB, Citibank, Boston Scientific, and major Irish construction firms like John Sisk & Sons and Collen Construction. It serves data centre, pharmaceutical, commercial, logistics, and utilities sectors across Ireland and Europe.

Managing director Paul Kennedy will stay on, and the existing management team will continue running the business. Cardinal will provide capital, strategic support, and access to its international network.

Why now? Automatic Fire has built a 45-year track record in complex fire protection — a niche that's increasingly critical as data centre and high-value infrastructure construction booms across Europe. The company completed a management buyout in 2019, led by Kennedy, Catriona Graham, and the late Jack Butler. Cardinal's backing marks the next growth phase.

"As the market leader in fire protection and complex fire-safety systems, Automatic Fire's expertise is highly sought after in critical infrastructure across high-value sectors," said John Dolan, Cardinal Capital's managing director.

What could go wrong? Scaling a specialist workforce by nearly 90% is no small feat, especially in a tight labour market for skilled trades. International expansion also brings execution risk — new markets, new regulations, new competitors.

The signal: This deal reflects two broader trends. First, private equity continues to target essential-services businesses with strong recurring revenue and sticky client relationships. Second, the explosion in data centre and critical infrastructure construction across Europe is creating outsized demand for specialist fire-protection firms.

Cardinal is backed by the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund, AIB, and Bank of Ireland, alongside international institutional investors. Its portfolio includes AA Ireland, Mowlam Healthcare, and Sports Surgery Clinic, among others — a pattern of investing in market leaders within niche sectors.

Founder Philip McDonald called the partnership "greater than the sum of the parts" and said it was "the right next step" after four decades of building the business.
