Scarlet Therapeutics raises £3.2M to build drugs from lab-grown red blood cells

What's the deal? Scarlet Therapeutics, a UK startup spun out of the University of Bristol, has raised £3.2M ($4.1M) in seed funding to develop a new class of therapeutics based on laboratory-grown red blood cells. The financing was announced on May 7.

The company was founded by Bristol professors Ash Toye and Jan Frayne. Its platform engineers red blood cells to deliver therapeutic proteins inside the human body.

The key twist: the proteins stay inside the red blood cell membrane, meaning the immune system doesn't recognise them as foreign. That could solve one of drug delivery's oldest problems — keeping the body from attacking the treatment before it works.

Why now? Cell therapy has matured rapidly, but most approaches focus on white blood cells or stem cells. Red blood cells — the body's most abundant cell type — remain largely untapped as a therapeutic vehicle. Advances in cell engineering and manufacturing have only recently made it feasible to grow and modify red blood cells at scale outside the body.

What could go wrong? Lab-grown red blood cell therapies are still early-stage. Manufacturing challenges, regulatory hurdles for an entirely novel drug class, and the leap from bench to clinic all pose significant risks. A £3.2M seed round is modest, meaning Scarlet will likely need follow-on funding well before any product reaches patients.

The signal: Scarlet sits at the intersection of two hot trends — engineered cell therapies and stealth drug delivery. If the approach works, it could open an entirely new platform for treating diseases where immune evasion is critical. The seed round signals investor appetite for unconventional biology bets coming out of UK universities, even at the earliest stages.
