Boathouse Capital exits Sandboxx, the app that reaches 80% of US military recruits
What's the deal? Boathouse Capital has exited its investment in Sandboxx, an app-based platform that supports military service members and their families from basic training onward. The Berwyn, Pennsylvania-based private equity firm announced the exit on May 19.
Sandboxx onboards roughly 80% of incoming US service members and has reached more than 6 million users. Its flagship product, Sandboxx Letters, digitised the process of sending physical letters to recruits in basic training — helping them stay connected with family and friends back home.
The company has since expanded beyond letters into a broader platform with products called Waypoints and Community, which serve service members and their support networks throughout their military careers.
Why now? Boathouse backed Sandboxx at what chief executive Sam Meek called "a critical inflection point," providing the capital and partnership needed to scale to profitability. With that milestone reached and the platform expanding, the timing was ripe for an exit.
"Boathouse gave us the partnership and conviction to scale to profitability and lay the foundation for the broader platform we are building today," Meek said.
The signal: Sandboxx sits at the intersection of two growing themes: mission-driven tech and defence-adjacent platforms. By turning an analogue tradition — handwritten letters to recruits — into a digital product, it built a wedge into a captive, underserved market and expanded from there.
Lorelei Gaus, vice president at Boathouse Capital, said the firm is "confident that Sandboxx will continue to find novel ways to leverage the latest in technology to benefit service members and their supporters in their next chapter."
The exit underscores growing investor appetite for platforms that serve military communities — a demographic with strong retention dynamics and clear, recurring needs. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
