NVision raises $55M to bring quantum tech to drug development

What's the deal? NVision, a quantum healthcare company, has closed a $55M Series B round anchored by Abbott. The German startup is using the capital to expand beyond quantum sensing into quantum computing, building what it calls an end-to-end platform for designing and validating therapies.

NVision's existing product, POLARIS, uses quantum technology to boost MRI signals by orders of magnitude, letting researchers measure metabolism in real time on standard MRI systems. This means treatment response can be assessed in hours or days rather than months.

Why now? While developing POLARIS, NVision discovered a new class of organic molecule-based qubits — a finding that opened the door to quantum computation. The company is now building a photonic quantum computing platform using these qubits integrated onto photonic chips.

The vision: use quantum computing to design better drug candidates, then validate them with quantum-enhanced MRI. NVision calls this a "compute and validate" approach — pairing computational drug design with real-world biological testing. POLARIS systems are already being installed at leading cancer centres worldwide.

What could go wrong? Quantum computing for drug design remains largely theoretical. Building a practical, commercially viable quantum computer — especially one based on a novel qubit architecture — is an enormous technical challenge. NVision will need to prove its organic molecule qubits can scale and outperform classical alternatives in drug discovery before the "compute and validate" loop becomes real.

The healthcare regulatory path adds another layer of complexity and timeline risk.

The signal: This round reflects growing investor appetite for quantum technologies with near-term commercial applications, particularly in healthcare. Abbott's involvement as anchor investor suggests big medtech players see quantum-enhanced imaging as more than a lab curiosity.

NVision's bet — that one company can own both the computational design and physical validation sides of drug development — is ambitious. If it works, it could compress drug development timelines significantly. For now, the sensing side provides revenue and credibility while the computing side matures.
